If beliefs are just thoughts we keep thinking until they become true for us, we could create a belief about anything we want—right? Then why do we keep thinking thoughts about what we DON'T want? We don't mean to, but we do. When I look in the mirror and don't like what I see, I tend to think thoughts of what I DON'T want: "I look fat,” “My stomach sticks out too much,” “Where did all of that cellulite come from,” “I need to stop having dessert," “I need to lose weight” etc. The feelings that go with those thoughts don't feel good either—I feel shame, embarrassment, and want to hide my body from myself and others. These are thoughts and feelings about what I DON’T want.
Our ego thinks that a constant focus on what needs to change will make it change, but it doesn’t work that way. Becoming aware of something that we want to be different is not the same as constantly focusing on it being that way. When we focus on what we don’t want, the universe responds to what we are thinking and feeling by bringing more of that experience to us. When I focus on what I don't like about my body, I quickly find myself having more experiences that match how I feel—embarrassment, shame and wanting to hide. How do we change this long-ingrained habit?
We can build a new experience by focusing our thoughts and feelings on how we expect to feel when we have what we desire – even though it isn’t like that now. This is a very different focus than our typical thoughts and feelings. When I think about my body looking healthy, lean and fit, I feel good! I want to wear clothes that show it off and make me feel beautiful. And I can imagine that happening and feel those good feelings now – even when nothing has changed yet on the outside. It's my choice what thoughts I think, and what feelings I choose to hang out with in my moment to moment experience. The more I think these thoughts and the good feelings that go with them, the faster my external experiences start to match up.
This may seem counter-intuitive, yet you did it every day as a child. It's about using your imagination for its intended use...intentionally creating your reality.
